Irish American Heritage, Irish History & Culture, and All Things Irish!

The richness of Irish culture and Irish history is known throughout the world. Though Ireland is only 33K square miles in size, with only 6M citizens, Irish influence on world culture has been enormous. In the United States, 36.3 million people endorse Irish heritage. In 1991, the U.S. Congress designated March as Irish American Heritage Month. Each year since 1991, by Presidential proclamation, March has been celebrated as Irish American Heritage Month. This hub is an index of great hubs (articles) on Irish history, Irish culture & traditions, and Irish American heritage by our HubPages HubMobsters.
Ireland is the 20th largest island in the world, with 32,599 square miles, measuring 174 miles at its widest, and 302 miles at its longest. Northern Ireland, at the northeastern part of the island, is 5462 square miles, with 1.8 million inhabitants. The Republic of Ireland consists of 27,136 square miles with 4.5 million inhabitants. Although the population of Ireland grows, it is still shockingly below the 8 million inhabitants who lived there in the early 19th century, before the potato blight and great famine.
Ireland- History and Heritage
Ireland is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The Normans, Vikings of Scandinavian descent who settled in Normandy, France, claimed Ireland in 1169. By 1172, King Henry II of England asserted authority, and English domination of Ireland was well seated by the 1500s.
Ireland, part of the UK since 1801, was partitioned in the early 20th century after a war of independence, creating the Irish Free State. Northern Ireland continued as part of the United Kingdom, though embroiled in civil unrest, especially from the late 60s, continuing through the 90s.
The Republic of Ireland economy was once dominated by agriculture, but is now replaced by services and high tech industries. Northern Ireland was once dependent on industries such as shipbuilding, but is now increasingly embracing services industries.
Ireland is a beautiful country noted for lush green landscapes, medieval castles and much, much more. Among Ireland’s countrymen and women are singers, musicians, actors, dancers and other artisans.
